Baker Hughes: US rig count down 4 units to 247

The US drilling rig count fell 4 units, reaching 247 rigs working for the week ended Aug. 7, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is down 687 units from the 934 rigs working this time a year ago.

The number of rigs drilling on land dropped 4 units week-over-week to a total of 235 units. The number of rigs drilling offshore was unchanged at 12.

US oil-directed rigs decreased by 4 from last week to reach 176 units. This time a year ago, 764 units were drilling for oil. Rigs targeting gas were unchanged at 69, 100 fewer than were drilling for gas at this time a year ago.

Among the major oil and gas-producing states, New Mexico’s 4-rig decline was the only movement in rig counts for the week. The state ended with the week at 46 rigs running.

Twelve states remained unchanged this week, namely Texas, 104; Louisiana, 29; Pennsylvania, 20; North Dakota, 11; Oklahoma, 11; Ohio, 6; Colorado, 5; West Virginia, 5; California, 4; Alaska, 3; Wyoming, 1; and Utah, 0.

Canada’s rig count increased by 3 for the week. At 47 rigs, the count is 93 fewer than the 140 units drilling this week a year ago. With 13 rigs drilling, Canada’s oil-directed rig count was up 2 for the week. Gas-directed rigs in Canada increased by a single unit to reach 34.
